Protecting Our Players: Masters Football Health
Mulgoa Valley FC encourages Masters players to join the MAFACARI II study to improve cardiac health awareness and stay safe on the football pitch.
At Mulgoa Valley Football Club, we know that football is more than just a game—it is a way of life, a source of community, and a fantastic way to stay active. For our Masters players aged 35 and over, the pitch is where we maintain our fitness and competitive spirit. However, it is vital that we balance our love for the game with a proactive approach to our long-term health. Recent research highlights that while exercise is beneficial, strenuous activity can present a transient increase in cardiac risk for older athletes. In fact, studies show that coronary artery disease is the leading cause of sudden cardiac arrest in athletes over 35. Many of us might feel invincible on the field, but the reality is that one in five Masters footballers may experience potential cardiac symptoms without always recognizing them as warning signs. This is why we are encouraging our members to get involved with the MAFACARI II study. This initiative, supported by the Nepean Football Association, is designed to improve cardiac health awareness among amateur players. By participating, you are not just helping researchers understand the unique needs of Masters athletes; you are gaining access to a free online Education Program that provides essential guidance on recognizing warning signs and managing heart health. The study is flexible, taking no more than 90 minutes of your time, and can be completed at your own pace. Whether you are a competitive player or enjoy the social side of the game, your health is our priority. We want every member of the Mulgoa Valley family to stay on the pitch for years to come. If you are aged 35 or over, please consider joining this important research. For more information on how to enroll, reach out to the Study Coordinator, Philippa (Pip) Heighes, at Philippa.Heighes@health.nsw.gov.au. Let’s look out for one another, both on and off the field, and ensure we are playing with the knowledge to keep our hearts as strong as our passion for the game.
